PURPOSE OF THIS BLOG

Through this blog I will examine how closely the government and the media are tied together and to what extent they can exalt pressure and influence on one another.

What is questionable and interesting is that, in the democratic states the views, represented by their governments and those of their rich influential lobbyists, are always promoted in the majority of their media with barely any opposing views. When this happens, it appears as if the opinions of those governments and lobbyists are forcefully promoting a bias – a one point perspective.

An example of this bias is the US approach to 9/11, which only gave a biased, one sided version of the events behind 9/11. Moreover, frequently the media has been accused, as in the case of the H1N1 vaccination, of representing the interests of large corporations and not that of the population. Surprisingly, we are in the midst of the flu season, yet all of a sudden all media promotion of H1N1 has stopped – is this because the pharmaceutical companies got their money, or has H1N1 miraculously disappeared of off the face of this earth? More importantly the citizens may want to ask themselves why much of the media is representing a totalitarian view of an issue without providing a broadcast of opposing views as may be happening in other nations. If bias is evident, then why and to what extent do the government and the media support this totalitarianism?

Whenever companies threaten to close down, when they do not receive subsidies, the media trumpets the fearful news to its citizens; however, when companies actually close down and are moving to a third world country, the media keeps silent; why? Obviously, either the media is somehow connected to these pharmaceutical, and other, corporations, as it is looks out for their interests, or the media only care about money and not about broadcasting the truth. Such a media may be willing to feed their citizens anything as long as it makes money. However, in a democratic nation the media should broadcast the truth and not give false and censored information. A truly democratic media should have courage and never fear the broadcasting of views which conflict with the government and the powerful lobby groups. The question is, are the interests of rich lobbyists being put too much ahead of the citizens? Something must be behind this bias, but what?
To add to this bias, the media increasingly aims at the viewer’s senses and not at informing the citizens of important issues. For example, it could be claimed that much of the news aims at terrorizing its citizens, as citizens are constantly being made to feel insecure. Gang violence and killing sprees, Middle Eastern terrorism, and job losses are just some of the things which keep the nation fearful. Why are the government and the media so preoccupied with making people live in fear? Normally, a government should not want to terrorize its citizens thus making them live in constant fear – unless this fear somehow benefits the media and the government. Perhaps people who are fearful are more easily controlled?
Through this blog I hope to examine how closely the government and the media are connected, and whether their connection generates the above-mentioned bias – bias which portrays the media as a source of information which has lost its credibility amongst its citizens.
